Powering a country: Algeria sustains power throughout the hot summer months with help from GE

SPE, the power generation subsidiary of Sonelgaz uses GE’s TM2500* power plants on wheels to put generation where it’s needed and then relocates those plants as conditions change.

Problem:
Demand hotspots create pockets of power needs that are difficult to meet
Algeria is an energy-demand roller coaster. The country’s extremely hot summers, fast-track development projects and grid challenges from a power infrastructure still under development create demand hotspots that need new energy capacity fast.

Solution:
Energy on the move with GE's TM2500 power plants on wheels
Algeria is keeping the lights on, the economy growing and the summer heat bearable with 38 TM2500 mobile turbines. The trailer-mounted plants deliver more than 760 MW of efficient, reliable power throughout the country. Some units are parked at fast-track development projects in out-of-the-way locations. Others respond to ever-changing demand. For example, several units power cooling for Algeria’s capital in the oppressively hot summer. When the heat of summer disappears, so do the TM2500 units. In a matter of weeks, they are relocated to development projects or to bridge capacity gaps as brick and mortar plants are built. The turbines’ fuel flexibility enables Sonelgaz to use the most convenient, cost-effective fuel locally available – natural gas reserves or liquid distillates delivered to remote locations. “The Algerian power generation company has a brilliant plan for capitalizing on the portability and fast, simple integration of the TM2500,” said Frederic Greiner, Senior Sales Executive TM2500, GE Power & Water’s Distributed Power “Their strategy of relocating and repurposing flexible, reliable generation is satisfying energy needs without misplaced capital spending and long lead times.”

Pinpoint Power Positioning Does More with Less
The turbines’ relocation window of just a few weeks enables power planners to shuffle resources and deploy power precisely where and when it’s needed. “GE’s TM2500 gen sets the power to change the way we look at energy deployment,” said Mr Nabil Kafi, CEO of SPE. “We can power everyday needs like summertime cooling as well as commercial and industrial development with the same fleet and without huge capital costs.” The same capital investment that makes summers in the capital area bearable are also supporting the country’s overall growth plan. So areas slated for permanent power plant construction don’t need to wait for the new plants to begin energy-intensive development.
